5 extra points in Super Final 3000 meters
As of this season, there are 5 extra Final Points (FP) to be earned in Super Finals over 3000m. Such Super Finals are only raced during championships such as World, European and national championschips. Before there would be a bell with 19 laps to go, where the first skater crossing the line with 18 laps to go earns 5 Final Points. From now on, another bell will wound with 10 laps to go for another 5 Final Points. This brings the maximum number of Final Points to be earned by one skater in a Super Final 3000m to 44 Final Points. Due to this addition, more spectacle is to be expected.
However, these are not really Final Points… These points only count towards the ranking of the Super Final and are therefore not used in the overall classification as was the case until last year, where the 5 extra points were also added to the overall Final Points count. Calculations therefore learn that the maximum of 10 extra points are not enough to beat the winner of the race when you come in second because that was a difference of 13 points. For all other positions, the extra points may come in handy.
The good thing is that you can now be certain of victory after wins of all three distances prior to the Super Final because even if the same skater came in second every single time, the difference is 39 FP and you can only win a total of 34 FP in the Super Final towards this classification, so even with a Yellow Card or Penalty, you are safe!
